Syrian Defense Minister: Negotiations with SDF near completion
DARAMSUQ — In an interview with Al-Majalla Magazine, Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra revealed that negotiations with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are approaching their conclusion.
Abu Qasra stated that no armed faction can operate as an independent entity within the framework of the new Syrian Army. He emphasized that any group joining the Army must operate under the authority of the Ministry of Defense.
The minister also called for recognizing Syria’s linguistic diversity, advocating for the removal of ‘Arabic’ from the country’s official name, ‘Syrian Arabic Republic,’ provided the SDF commits to raising the Free Syria flag.
Addressing broader national issues, Abu Qasra noted that the new administration is not rushing to hold the National Dialogue Conference, emphasizing the importance of careful planning. He highlighted ongoing efforts to counter Israeli actions in Syria.
On regional and religious matters, Abu Qasra affirmed that Syria’s Shiite community is managed by the state, which ensures their rights, and reiterated the administration’s stance against Iranian interference in Syrian affairs.
Reflecting on international relations, the minister described a recent visit to Saudi Arabia as productive, noting that the trip served to communicate the vision for Syria’s new administration and its priorities.
