Administration of North and East Syria launches initiative for voluntary returns of displaced Syrians from Al-Hol Camp
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — The Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) announced a new program to facilitate the voluntary return of Syrian citizens residing in Al-Hol Camp to their original areas of residence. This initiative, according to the Authority for Social Affairs and Labor, is designed to ensure safe and dignified returns with comprehensive support.
Building on Past Efforts Amid Political Change
This announcement follows a similar decision made on 5 October 2020, which encouraged voluntary returns. However, fears related to the former regime had deterred many families from leaving the camps. DAARNES highlighted that recent political shifts in Syria have alleviated such concerns, making it an opportune time to support displaced individuals in returning home.
DAARNES expressed its readiness to provide logistical assistance, including organized transportation for returning families. “Our doors are open for a safe return, and we are committed to facilitating this transition for all residents,” read the statement.
Appeal for International Humanitarian Support
DAARNES called on international humanitarian organizations to intensify their efforts to support displaced Syrians living in camps such as Al-Hol, Al-Arisha, Mahmoudli, Twaihiniah, and Abu Khashab. The Administration emphasized the need for greater collaboration to meet the immediate needs of camp residents and support their reintegration into society.
The statement drew attention to the dire conditions of individuals displaced from Cafrin (Afrin), Tel Abyad, and Rish Ayno (Ras al-Ayn), areas impacted by Turkish military operations. DAARNES urged the international community and the United Nations to provide guarantees for the safe and dignified return of these communities.
“The world must bear its responsibility to support these vulnerable populations and uphold their rights,” the statement asserted, stressing the importance of preventing further displacement.
A Step Toward National Reconciliation
As Syria navigates a new political phase, DAARNES’s initiative represents a significant step toward rebuilding communities and fostering national reconciliation. By prioritizing voluntary returns and seeking international solidarity, the administration aims to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive and stable future for all Syrians.
