Druze Spiritual Leader Sheikh al-Hijri: Diversity is Syria’s strength, unity is non-negotiable

SUWAYDA, Syria — Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Syria, has welcomed a recent visit by the Syriac Union Party (SUP) delegation to Suwayda as a profound step toward fostering national unity. In comments to Syriac Press, Sheikh al-Hijri described the encounter as a moment of familial connection, emphasizing its significance in strengthening ties among Syria’s diverse communities.

“Their visit was a bridge, not just between regions, but among hearts,” he said, highlighting the importance of collaboration during Syria’s transitional period.

Reflecting on the fall of the previous regime, which ruled Syria for over 60 years, Sheikh al-Hijri called it a monumental shift, marking the end of a “crushing era for all Syrians.” He acknowledged the challenges of the past but expressed hope for an unprecedented opportunity to rebuild the nation.

“This is not just a political change; it is a chance for a new chapter where all voices can contribute to shaping a unified and inclusive Syria,” he stated.

Diversity as a Strength: A Vision of Inclusivity

Sheikh al-Hijri underscored the importance of Syria’s ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, calling it a source of strength rather than division.

“Our diversity is our strength. This phase requires genuine partnership through dialogue among all Syrians—across regions, communities, and beliefs,” he emphasized, adding that such collaboration is essential for guiding the nation toward stability and inclusivity.

The Druze leader praised the Syriac Union Party for its dedication to fostering inclusivity and meaningful political change. He highlighted the alignment of the Druze and Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities in their shared aspirations for Syria.

“We share common challenges and goals,” he noted. “Continuous dialogue among all Syrian factions is vital to achieving political harmony and fostering a shared vision for our nation’s future.”

Sheikh al-Hijri called for policies that reflect the interests of all Syrians, without exclusion or marginalization. He stressed that inclusive decision-making must remain central to political reforms.

“Our future must be built on principles of justice and equality,” he said, cautioning against sidelining any ideas or communities. “National unity is non-negotiable, and every voice matters in shaping the path forward.”

A Beautiful Syria is a Shared Responsibility

Concluding his remarks, Sheikh al-Hijri shared an optimistic vision of a Syria that embraces its historical and cultural diversity.

“Syria is beautiful in its diversity, and this must be the cornerstone of our future. It is our collective responsibility to build a nation that welcomes all without exception,” he said.

Through his reflections, Sheikh al-Hijri underscored the critical role of unity, dialogue, and shared responsibility in Syria’s recovery, urging all communities to prioritize mutual respect and collaboration in shaping the nation’s future.
