Syriac veteran of Korean War Gawriye Bekdaş honored by South Korea and Turkey

LOS ANGELES — In a touching ceremony held on 22 January in Los Angeles, Syriac veteran Gawriye Bekdaş received recognition from the South Korean and Turkish consulates in Los Angeles, California, USA, for his bravery and sacrifices during the Korean War (1950–1953). A member of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community and former soldier in the Turkish military, Bekdaş sustained severe injuries while serving in the conflict.

Bekdaş, now residing in Los Angeles, was among 15,000 Turkish soldiers who fought in the Korean War alongside allied forces from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Greece, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg as a part of a joint United Nations force. His injuries stand as a testament to the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who risked their lives to uphold peace and stability in South Korea.

During the ceremony, representatives from the South Korean Consulate presented Bekdaş with an award, expressing their heartfelt gratitude for his service. The event was a solemn tribute to Bekdaş’srole in a defining moment of modern history.



Turkey’s Role in the Korean War

Turkey’s involvement in the Korean War marked its debut in global military engagements as a NATO member. The Turkish Brigade, known for its valor, suffered significant losses, with 721 soldiers killed and many others injured. Their contribution was pivotal in key battles, earning admiration from their allies and the international community.

The Korean War, a devastating conflict that claimed approximately 2.5 million lives, concluded with an armistice in 1953. Its legacy continues to influence international relations and military strategies to this day.

Honoring Unsung Heroes

The ceremony honoring Bekdaş highlights the enduring importance of recognizing the sacrifices of war veterans. As one of the few surviving witnesses to the Korean War from the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community, Bekdaş’s story underscores the Syriac people’s contributions to global history.
