Democratic Autonomous Administration of Region of North and East Syria facilitates Syrian families’ departure from Al-Hol Camp

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA— In comments to our news desk, Sheikhmous Ahmed, Co-Chair of Office for Displaced Persons and Refugees under the Authority of Social Affairs and Labor in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), reaffirmed the DAARNES commitment to assisting Syrian families wishing to leave the Al-Hol camp. Ahmed highlighted that this initiative aims to ensure safe and dignified returns, marking a renewed effort in light of Syria’s evolving political landscape.

Overcoming past security challenges

Ahmed explained that while the idea of allowing Syrian families to leave Al-Hol is not new, previous security concerns tied to the former regime’s control over certain areas delayed its implementation.

“With the regime no longer in power, families can now return safely to their original homes,” Ahmed stated, emphasizing the DAARNES readiness to support these families by reopening registration for return trips within the camp.

Comprehensive support for returnees

The DAARNES has pledged to provide full logistical support to ensure the success of these return journeys. Ahmed assured that the DAARNES is prepared to facilitate the process, with trips organized for both regions within North and East Syria and areas outside its control.

“We aim to make this process seamless and accessible for every family ready to return,” he noted.

Call for international collaboration

Ahmed urged international organizations to extend their support, particularly concerning other camps within the region. “The assistance of global humanitarian actors is essential for clearing these camps and enabling displaced families to return to their communities,” he stated, stressing the need for joint efforts to address the humanitarian crisis effectively.

He also welcomed the participation of organizations operating outside the DAARNES’s jurisdiction, provided they coordinate with local authorities. “Such collaboration will ensure that all return journeys are secure and well-managed,” Ahmed remarked, noting that Internal Security Forces (ISF) would accompany each trip for added safety.

Streamlining the return process

Ahmed reassured that the return journeys would mirror previous successful initiatives, maintaining a consistent approach to organization and security. “Our goal is to ensure that every returning family feels supported and protected throughout this transition,” he explained.

A path toward stability and resettlement

As North and East Syria enters a new chapter, this initiative reflects the DAARNES’s broader commitment to fostering stability and resettlement. By addressing the challenges of displacement and inviting international cooperation, the DAARNES is taking a significant step toward rebuilding communities and enabling Syrians to reclaim their lives in safety and dignity.
