The 188 Alliance condemns Iraq’s personal status law amendments

ERBIL— The 188 Alliance, which includes the Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) in Iraq sharply denounced the recent amendments to Iraq’s Personal Status Law. The Alliance labeled these changes as a direct assault on the constitution, an affront to justice, and a clear insult to Iraqi men and women alike.

Controversial laws threaten social stability

The Alliance statement comes in response to the Iraqi Parliament’s approval of three controversial laws related to personal status. These laws, according to the alliance, jeopardize the rights of women and children and pose a serious threat to societal harmony. The Alliance described the amendments as a violation of the spirit of civil justice, stating: “These changes send a clear message to every Iraqi citizen that the protection of society, families, and the rights of women and children is no longer a priority.”

Parliament’s legislative failure

The Alliance expressed deep concern over the manner in which these laws were passed, citing a lack of transparency and accountability among lawmakers. It criticized the inability of parliamentarians to fulfill their constitutional duties or maintain trust among themselves, further highlighting the erosion of democratic principles in Iraq’s legislative process.

A commitment to resistance

The Alliance vowed to remain steadfast in opposing these amendments, reiterating its unwavering support for the rights of women and children.

“We will reject these laws by every constitutional and legal means available, as they represent a stain on the record of the various political factions involved,” the statement declared.

The Alliance also emphasized its dedication to advocating for gender equality and social justice.

Seeking international support

The Alliance announced plans to appeal to international human rights organizations to exert pressure on the Iraqi government to reconsider these legislative changes. It called for a return to the original text of the law, urging the global community to support the protection of fundamental rights in Iraq.

A call for unity and justice

Concluding its statement, the Alliance urged all Iraqis to join the fight against these amendments, stressing the need for a unified stance to uphold justice and equality in Iraq. By challenging these laws, the Alliance aims to safeguard the foundational principles of the Iraqi constitution and ensure a future that respects the rights and dignity of all citizens.
