Jacobite Syrian Christian Bishop Mor Gregorios Joseph elected as Maphrian of India, consecration set for March 2025

KOTTAYAM, India — The Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate announced the election of Jacobite Syrian Christian Bishop Mor Gregorios Joseph as the new Maphrian of India, following the passing of the late Maphrian Mor Baselios Thomas I on 31 October 2024.

The election was finalized during a session of the Holy Synod in India on 8 December 2024, presided over by Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II. The bishops attending the Synod unanimously agreed on Bishop Mor Gregorios Joseph’s selection for this prominent position.

The decision was later ratified by the Antiochian Syriac Orthodox Holy Synod, reaffirming the Church’s dedication to unity and stability during this period of leadership transition in India.

The consecration ceremony for Maphrian Mor Gregorios Joseph is scheduled for Tuesday, 25 March 2025, coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation. The event will take place at the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Atchaneh, Lebanon, and is expected to attract clergy and faithful from across the globe.

Legacy of Service to the Church

Born in Kochi in 1960, Bishop Mor Gregorios Joseph has been a devoted servant of the Syriac Orthodox Church for decades. Consecrated as a bishop in 1994 by the late Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka I, he was later granted the title Bishop of Malankara during Patriarch Aphrem II’s visit to India in February 2024.
