Head of Lebanese Forces party Samir Geagea criticizes government over southern Lebanon tragedy caused by Israeli shelling
BEIRUT — Lebanese Forces (LF) leader Dr. Samir Geagea condemned the government’s response to the recent deadly shelling in southern Lebanon, which claimed the lives of more than 20 people, including Lebanese soldiers. Geagea argued the tragedy exposes the government’s fragility and inability to safeguard its citizens.
Deadly Shelling as Citizens Return Home
As residents attempted to return to villages in southern Lebanon, they were met with Israeli shelling that left dozens dead. Dr. Geagea described the incident as a consequence of governmental weakness and the reckless political behavior of certain factions.
He accused the “Axis of Resistance” of exploiting the situation for propaganda purposes, saying, “In their pursuit of deceptive media coverage, they disregard civilian lives, leading to daily tragedies.”
Geagea urged the government to utilize Lebanon’s international monitoring committee to provide clear guidance about areas safe for return. He criticized political groups for exploiting confusion and failing to protect civilians and soldiers, adding, “The government must take charge to prevent further loss of life and ensure safe returns.”
Condemnation of Exploitation
Dr. Geagea accused the so-called Axis of Resistance of endangering civilians to serve political agendas, emphasizing the need for authorities to counter such reckless actions.
Responding to Hezbollah’s “Army, People, Resistance” rhetoric, Geagea dismissed it as obsolete. “There is only the army, the people, and the state,” he stated, stressing that outdated slogans have no place in Lebanon’s future.
Dr. Geagea’s comments reflect growing frustration over the government’s inability to protect citizens amid escalating tensions. The incident highlights the urgent need for competent leadership to guide Lebanon through its challenges and safeguard its people.
