Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani orders increased integration of Christians into Nineveh Police Force

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has directed the integration of more Christians into the local police force in Nineveh Province. This initiative aims to enhance stability, support reconstruction efforts, and preserve the Christian presence in the region.

Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, confirmed the Prime Minister’s directive as part of the government’s broader efforts to promote stability and development across Iraq. Nineveh Plains, a historic and cultural hub for Iraq’s Christian community, remains a focal point for these initiatives.

Building on measures introduced over the past two years, Christian recruits have been accepted into various training programs, including the Police College, the Higher Institute for Administrative and Professional Development, the Police Commissioners’ Academy, and the Women’s Training Institute.

“This step underscores the government’s dedication to fostering stronger ties between local communities and security institutions while safeguarding Iraq’s Christian heritage,” the statement read.

Preserving Iraq’s Cultural Diversity

The directive aligns with the government’s mission to protect Iraq’s diverse cultural heritage and strengthen security in Nineveh Plains. The region is renowned for its vibrant Christian Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian communities, which have played a significant role in Iraq’s history and culture.

The government emphasized its commitment to preserving the unique identity of these communities, stating, “We aim to plant the seeds of stability in the Nineveh Plain and maintain the vibrant presence of the Chaldean, Assyrian, and Syriac communities in their ancestral towns and villages.”

The inclusion of Christians in Nineveh’s police force is a critical step toward fostering inclusivity and promoting equal opportunities for all Iraqis. By actively involving minority groups in public institutions, the government seeks to ensure fair representation and empower communities in rebuilding Iraq’s future.

Prime Minister al-Sudani’s initiative reflects a renewed focus on embracing Iraq’s diversity and strengthening the social fabric of a nation working to heal from decades of conflict and division.
