650 global women’s rights activists call for recognition of Administration of North and East Syria
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Hundreds of women’s rights activists from around the world issued a powerful plea to international organizations, urging recognition of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) and an immediate halt to Turkish military aggression in the area.
The letter, signed by 650 influential figures, including politicians, academics, journalists, writers, human rights activists, and women’s organizations from 50 countries, emphasized the importance of acknowledging DAARNES as a legitimate governing body. It highlighted the ongoing violence inflicted by Turkey and Syrian National Army (SNA) proxies, calling for decisive international intervention.
Addressed to key global leaders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, European Council President Antonio Luis Santos da Costa, and Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the letter demanded immediate action to safeguard the region and its people.
The message underscored the necessity of recognizing DAARNES to ensure stability and fairness in the region. It called for an end to Turkish occupation and aggression, urging international actors to support efforts for peace and democracy. The letter also stressed the vital role of women in shaping Syria’s future, advocating for their active participation in the reconstruction of the country and in the political decision-making processes.
In alignment with the Syrian Women’s Council’s demands, the letter further called for a more inclusive approach to rebuilding Syria, ensuring that women and all societal groups play an integral role in the process. It also urged an immediate cessation of arms supplies and political backing for Turkey, advocating for strengthened diplomatic relations with Syrian democratic forces to promote peace and stability.
