Christian Front in Lebanon calls for implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions and adoption of federalism
BEIRUT — In a public statement posted to Facebook, the Christian Front in Lebanon called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and related provisions, including Resolution 1559, which demands the disarmament of Hezbollah and other militias.
The Front held Hezbollah responsible for the devastating Gaza War, which has had widespread repercussions on all Lebanese communities, particularly the Shiite population. It also attributed the Israeli reoccupation of border regions in southern Lebanon to Hezbollah’s actions.
The Christian Front cautioned the incoming government against succumbing to what it described as a “trap” set by pro-Iranian forces. The group accused Hezbollah of attempting to seize political power through coercion, blackmail, and demands for control over key ministries, particularly the Finance Ministry.
International Oversight
The Front highlighted the international community’s close monitoring of Lebanon’s political developments, particularly following the election of General Joseph Aoun as president and the appointment of Judge Nawaf Salam to form a new government. It stressed the importance of their commitment to implementing UN resolutions, including limiting the proliferation of weapons in the country.
Expressing skepticism about Hezbollah’s willingness to accept the ongoing political and regional changes, the Front warned that the group’s resistance could hinder Lebanon’s path toward stability and reform.
Call for Federalism
As a long-term solution to Lebanon’s political challenges, the Christian Front advocated for a federal system of governance. It argued that federalism would safeguard political and cultural pluralism, protect the rights of Lebanon’s diverse communities, and uphold the principles of self-determination, freedom, dignity, and peace.
The Christian Front’s proposals highlight the growing urgency for political reform and the pursuit of solutions to ensure Lebanon’s stability and coexistence amid a shifting regional landscape.
