Pope Francis: We cannot imagine Iraq without Christians because they are an essential part of its identity

BAGHDAD — German journalist and theologian Matthias Kopp, spokesperson for the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) and Consultor for the Dicastery for Communication, has published a book titled The Christian Heritage in Iraq.

The book, released by Herder and currently available in German, explores the history of Christianity in Iraq with a particular focus on Pope Francis’ historic visit to the country in 2021 and the Holy See’s diplomatic efforts in the region.

The book delves into the origins of Christianity in Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and includes a preface written by Pope Francis in Italian. The Pope used the preface to express his solidarity with Iraqi Christians and all people of goodwill.

“Despite the challenges Iraq faces, I look at this country with hope, as it possesses extraordinary potential. This potential lies, above all, in the people of Iraq themselves — those contributing to the reconstruction of civil society, promoting democracy, and fostering sincere and realistic interreligious dialogue,” the Pope wrote.

The book highlights Iraq’s rich Christian heritage, including ancient theological schools, centuries of coexistence between Muslims and Christians, and the hardships faced by Christian communities, particularly the persecutions of the 20th century.

Pope Francis also emphasized the importance of Iraq’s Catholic liturgical diversity and acknowledged the Vatican’s role in supporting Iraqi Christians through its diplomatic representatives.

“We cannot imagine Iraq without Christians because they are an essential part of its identity,” the Pope stated.

The publication serves as both a historical account and a testament to the enduring presence and contributions of Christians in Iraq, reinforcing the Vatican’s message of hope, unity, and resilience for the country’s future.
