17 mass graves unearthed in Syria, evidence of the former regime’s brutality

DARAMSUQ — The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported the discovery of 17 mass graves across various regions of Syria since the fall of the former regime two months ago. These findings expose the devastating toll on civilians during the years of war.

The mass graves contain the remains of 1,632 victims, including women and children, highlighting the extent of systematic killings and enforced disappearances perpetrated under the former dictatorial regime.

Human rights advocates have called for the preservation of evidence from these atrocities to ensure accountability and justice for the victims. “These graves stand as a testament to the crimes committed and must serve as evidence against those responsible,” a spokesperson for SOHR stated.

The organization has provided detailed statistics on the locations, dates of discovery, and the number of bodies recovered between December 2024 and 2 February 2025.

The mass graves were distributed across the following regions:

    • Daramsuq (Damascus) and its countryside: 4 graves
    • Dayro Zcuro (Deir ez-Zor): 5 graves
    • Hmoth (Homs): 4 graves
    • Druco (Daraa): 3 graves
    • Hemto (Hama): 1 grave

These findings underscore the enduring impact of Syria’s prolonged conflict and the urgent need for reconciliation and justice for those who suffered under the former regime.
