EU leaders meet to discuss US tariff threats as tensions rise

BRUSSELS — US President Donald Trump has heightened tensions with allied nations by threatening to impose tariffs on goods imported from Europe. The move aims to pressure these countries into conducting their trade transactions with the US in US Dollars.

Canada, Mexico, and China, also affected by the resolution, have announced their intention to adopt reciprocal measures in response to the US decision.

Trump’s actions prompted an urgent meeting of European Union member states in Brussels to address the escalating situation. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Trump’s pressure would strengthen European unity and enhance their efficiency in implementing safety and security measures. Macron emphasized the importance of developing the EU’s industrial, defense, technological, and trade capacities in response to the challenge.

Regarding Trump’s controversial remarks about the possibility of “autonomous administration” for Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on EU member states to support Denmark, asserting that “Greenland is not for sale.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirmed Germany’s readiness to impose counter-tariffs on the US if necessary. He noted that while the EU and US mutually benefit from trade exchange, Trump’s threats risk creating significant problems for both parties.

The EU’s united stance highlights a growing determination to protect its interests against mounting US economic pressures.
