Five Years without Answers: Memorial Mass in France honors memory of Hurmuz and Shmuni Diril

PARIS — A memorial Mass was held last Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Sarcelles, France, to honor the memory of Hurmuz and Shmuni Diril, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances in Şırnak, Turkey, in 2020.

Community Attendance and Calls for Justice

Members of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community gathered to pay their respects and renew their call for truth and justice regarding the tragic events. Attendees emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to uncover the fate of Hurmuz Diril, who remains missing, while mourning the loss of Shmuni Diril, whose body was discovered near a riverbank in their village shortly after the couple’s disappearance.

Father Ramzi Diril: The Pain Endures

Father Ramzi Diril, the son of the missing couple, shared his family’s profound grief and the challenges they continue to face. Speaking at the service, he reiterated their determination to seek justice and closure despite the lack of resolution. “The uncertainty surrounding my father’s fate has been an unbearable burden,” he stated.

Developments in the Investigation

Four years after the incident, the investigation remains active. Authorities recently announced the arrest of three suspects connected to the case. However, critical questions remain unanswered, deepening the mystery of Hurmuz’s disappearance and the circumstances of Shmuni’s murder.

Solidarity and Hope for Justice

The memorial Mass was part of the community’s broader efforts to support the Diril family and press for answers. With investigations ongoing, there is hope that justice will be served, finally bringing resolution to one of the most troubling cases in recent memory.
