World Maronite Union urges dissolution of Hezbollah and accountability for its crimes
BEIRUT — The General Secretariat of the World Maronite Union called for decisive action to dissolve Hezbollah and hold the group accountable for its role in destabilizing Lebanon.
In its statement, the Union emphasized the urgent need to halt external funding to Hezbollah and accused its leadership of inciting war, causing civilian casualties, and engaging in the unlawful use of weapons.
Reforming Security Oversight
The Union also demanded the replacement of the Army Intelligence Command in southern Lebanon, advocating for the appointment of officers unconnected to Hezbollah. This measure, it argued, would prevent the exploitation of the region’s security and political situation for the group’s interests. Additionally, the union called for a halt to any military activities or foreign funding associated with Hezbollah under strict penalties.
Stalled Government Formation
Addressing Lebanon’s political gridlock, the Union highlighted the lack of progress since Nawaf Salam was tasked with forming a government three weeks ago. It urged Salam to step aside and allow a sovereign figure to take on the role, emphasizing the need for a government capable of addressing the nation’s mounting challenges.
The Union also stressed the importance of firm measures to secure the southern borders and prevent Hezbollah from exploiting citizens or dragging the country into new confrontations.
In its appeal, the World Maronite Union called on Lebanese authorities to act decisively against movements that could incite division, including provocative protests, warning that such actions could further inflame tensions in an already fragile Lebanon.
