Syriac Progressive Youth Union calls for secular, decentralized governance in Syria

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — In remarks to North Press Agency, Sobhi Malke, Co-Chair of the Syriac Progressive Youth Union (SPYU), emphasized the need for Syria to adopt a secular, decentralized civilian system of governance. He highlighted that this approach would ensure the rights and representation of all ethnic communities in Syria.

Malke clarified that decentralization does not equate to division but is instead the hallmark of advanced governance in developed nations. “Decentralization will help eliminate conflict in Syria,” he stated. “Violence and revenge cannot build a stable state following the fall of the previous regime, which enforced cultural exclusion and dictatorship on all ethnic groups.”

Malke underscored the sacrifices made by all Syrians during the 14 years of conflict, stressing the importance of inclusivity in shaping Syria’s future. “The new government must draft a constitution that represents the collective will of all Syrians, encompassing all ethnic communities,” he added.

The SPYU’s call for a secular and decentralized system reflects growing demands for a governance model that prioritizes equality, inclusivity, and peace as Syria transitions toward rebuilding its state.
