Syriac Women’s Union highlights women’s role in building a new Syria during conference on political participation of women

ZALIN, North and East Syria — Speaking at a women’s conference in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, Georgette Barsomo, an official with the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU), emphasized the vital role of women in shaping the future of a new, unified Syria.

“We discussed the importance of women’s participation not only in the regions of North and East Syria but across all Syrian territories,” Barsomo stated. She stressed the need for women to actively contribute to the Syrian transition process, advocating for their political and social rights throughout the country.

Women’s Conference Advocates Political Inclusion

The conference, organized by women’s movements in Zalin, focused on enhancing women’s political involvement in Syria’s reconstruction. It was spearheaded by the Peace She-Leaders Network and the Şawîşka Association, with support from the International Women’s League for Peace and Freedom.

The gathering brought together 30 women from various parts of North and East Syria to deliberate on critical issues, including the development of Syria’s political process, United Nations intervention in the Syrian conflict, women’s participation in the political transition, and the future trajectory of the country.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to advancing women’s roles in the political sphere and ensuring that their voices are central to decision-making in the ongoing transition.

This conference marks a step forward in advocating for women’s empowerment and equal representation as Syria navigates its path toward a sustainable and inclusive future.
