Macron calls for full integration of Syrian Democratic Forces in Syria’s transitional process

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated his call for the complete integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into Syria’s transitional framework. In a phone call with Ahmed al-Sharaa, President of the Syrian Transitional Government, Macron emphasized France’s steadfast commitment to the SDF and its role in shaping the country’s future.

Advocacy for Political Inclusion and Counterterrorism

Since the fall of the authoritarian Bashar al-Assad on 8 December, France has consistently supported the inclusion of all Syrian communities in the nation’s governance. Macron’s latest comments reaffirm France’s position on ensuring that the SDF plays a central role in building a new Syria.

During his conversation with al-Sharaa, Macron underscored the importance of ongoing counterterrorism efforts, not only to benefit the Syrian people but also to safeguard France’s national security. According to a statement from the Élysée Palace, Macron expressed his hope that Syria’s interim authorities would fulfill the aspirations of their citizens and create a just and inclusive political framework.

Kurdish Inclusion Remains a French Priority

Last week, Macron held a separate phone call with Kurdistan Regional Government President Nechirvan Barzani, during which he reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting the SDF. He highlighted the necessity of a political transition that respects the rights of all ethnic and religious groups in Syria.

The Élysée’s statement coincided with remarks by French Foreign Minister Jean Barrot in the French Parliament, where he described Syria’s Kurds as “France’s loyal allies and comrades-in-arms.” Barrot assured that Paris would never abandon them and confirmed their participation in an upcoming international conference on Syria, scheduled to take place in Paris on 13 February.

France’s continued advocacy reflects its broader commitment to a stable and inclusive future for Syria, with a particular focus on safeguarding the rights of minority groups and maintaining the fight against terrorism.
