ZALIN, North and East Syria — The Syriac Cultural Association in Zalin (Qamishli), Gozarto Canton, North and East Syria, held a commemoration event honoring the 95th anniversary of the passing of renowned Syriac journalist and writer Naum Faiq.
The event brought together representatives from institutions of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB), families of the Association’s trainees, and members of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community.
Speaking to our news desk, Ruba al-Frehat, an official of the Syriac Cultural Association in Zalin, highlighted the enduring legacy of Naum Faiq. She emphasized the Association’s commitment to preserving and revitalizing the intangible cultural heritage of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people by teaching heritage songs, folklore, theater, music, and poetry.
The commemoration began with a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, followed by a folklore performance by trainees from the association. A speech delivered by the association reflected on Faik’s profound influence and his prominent role in enriching Syriac culture over decades.
The ceremony also featured traditional dances and a musical performance, further celebrating the cultural heritage championed by Naum Faiq.
Naum Faiq, who passed away on 5 February 1930, in New Jersey, USA, due to pneumonia, left behind a significant legacy. He was the founder of the Beth Nahrin and Al-Etihad newspapers, the latter of which continues to be published in Sweden today.
