Young Women’s Office of SDYC condemns violations against women in areas governed by Syrian Transitional Government

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — In response to documented violations against women in areas controlled by the Syrian Interim Government, the Young Women’s Office of the Syrian Democratic Youth Council (SDYC) issued a strong condemnation.

The statement highlighted the plight of young women, including Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) and Alawite women, who have been subjected to arrests, torture, and marginalization in political representation. It further criticized the patriarchal mindset of women in leadership positions in the “New Syria,” arguing that such figures fail to represent the freedoms and needs of Syrian women.

The SDYC statement firmly opposed the imposition of mandatory hijab, asserting that women must have the freedom to choose their clothing without social or legal pressure. It emphasized that young women in North and East Syria have demonstrated remarkable leadership and offered a transformative model of women whose roles extend beyond safeguarding their rights to actively shaping the future and building a just and equal society.

The statement called for the creation of a society that respects diverse choices and supports women in making personal decisions. It praised the participation of young women in the uprising in North and East Syria as a significant example of women’s pivotal roles in revolutionary movements.

Affirming that a new, democratic, and stable Syria cannot be achieved without the active involvement of young women, the statement underscored the importance of their participation in all aspects of political, social, and economic life. It urged young women to organize themselves around the philosophy of “Women, Life, Freedom,” which encapsulates their vital role in driving justice and equality in a reimagined Syria.
