Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa reaches landmark agreement to dissolve opposition bodies

DARAMSUQ — In a landmark move for Syria’s political transition, Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa has reached an agreement with the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) and the opposition’s National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces (SNRC) to dissolve both entities. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting at the People’s Palace in Daramsuq (Damascus).

New Chapter in Syria’s Transition

The meeting brought together key opposition figures, including Hadi al-Bahra, head of the SNRC, and Badr Jamous, leader of the SNC. Also present were members of the coalition’s political body and Jihad Marai, head of the Syrian Tribes and Clans Council.

According to a statement from the Syrian Transitional Presidency, the agreement aligns with the Declaration of the Syrian Revolution’s Victory, a document that advocates for dissolving institutions established during the uprising and integrating them into state structures. The statement highlighted that all documents and files previously managed by the opposition entities would now be transferred to state institutions to maintain continuity in serving the Syrian people and rebuilding the nation under presidential leadership.

Step Toward Political Transition

Representatives from the SNC and SNRC emphasized the importance of following the roadmap set forth by Transitional President al-Sharaa. They noted that the success of the transition hinges on forming an inclusive transitional government that represents all segments of Syrian society.

The agreement outlines several key steps for the political transition, including drafting a new constitution to be ratified through a nationwide referendum. It also prioritizes holding free and fair elections at all levels of government. These measures, the statement stressed, are vital to establishing a democratic framework that ensures stability and inclusivity for Syria’s future.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in Syria’s ongoing journey toward national reconciliation and political reform, offering hope for a more united and democratic future.
