Lebanese President Aoun calls for Syrian refugee repatriation, stresses regional stability during meeting with Portuguese Foreign Minister Rangel

BEIRUT — During a meeting at the Baabda Palace with Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, asserting that the reasons for their prolonged stay in Lebanon no longer apply following the fall of the Assad regime. Rangel visited Beirut to congratulate Aoun on his recent election as Lebanon’s president.

Lebanon’s Stance on Regional Issues

During their discussions, President Aoun urged the European Union (EU) to pressure Israel to complete its withdrawal from southern Lebanon by the agreed deadline of 18 February. He also reiterated Lebanon’s unwavering stance on the Palestinian issue, firmly rejecting any proposals that suggest the displacement of Palestinians from their homeland.

Rangel emphasized Portugal’s commitment to supporting Lebanon in various sectors. He highlighted the need to overcome internal divisions and strengthen state institutions, particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces, to ensure the full authority of the state over Lebanese territory. Additionally, Rangel underscored the importance of reinforcing the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Portugal’s Commitment to Regional Stability

On the Palestinian issue, Rangel reaffirmed Portugal’s steadfast support for a two-state solution and the reconstruction of Gaza. He emphasized the importance of empowering the Palestinian Authority to lead rebuilding efforts and maintaining ceasefires both in Gaza and along Lebanon’s borders.

The Portuguese foreign minister concluded by expressing Portugal’s confidence in Lebanon’s potential to achieve peace and prosperity. He emphasized Lebanon’s unique role in fostering understanding and dialogue in the region, voicing hope that the country’s perspective would resonate within the international community.
