Paris hosts International Conference on Syrian political transition

PARIS — More than two months after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s authoritarian regime, Paris hosted an international conference to discuss pathways for Syria’s political transition. The event brought together key regional and global stakeholders, aiming to coordinate efforts for a peaceful transition that upholds Syria’s sovereignty and stability.

Economic and Humanitarian Considerations

The conference, organized by the French Foreign Ministry, focused on rallying Syria’s neighbors and international partners to streamline aid efforts and provide economic support. Discussions addressed both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term strategies for rebuilding the war-torn nation.

A critical issue on the agenda is the humanitarian crisis, particularly in North and East Syria, where reduced US assistance has strained aid operations. Major international donors assessed the situation and explored solutions to prevent further destabilization.

Although the event is not a formal donor conference, financial commitments were discussed ahead of the annual Brussels pledging conference in March. Participants also debated economic policies, including the potential easing of sanctions, to facilitate Syria’s recovery.

Key Players and Regional Dynamics

The conference included representatives from Syria’s neighboring countries, the Arab League, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Turkey, the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United Nations. Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations were also in attendance, alongside Syrian Transitional Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani.

Discussions covered a range of topics, including the role of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), relations with the new government in Daramsuq (Damascus), and Turkey’s position within the evolving Syrian landscape.
