Bethnahrin Women’s Union visits Assyrian Democratic Party office in Hasakah, North and East Syria
HASAKAH, North and East Syria — A delegation from the Bethnahrin Women’s Union (Huyodo d’Neshe d’Bethnahrin, HNB) visited the Assyrian Democratic Party’s (ADP) office in Hasakah, North and East Syria, to strengthen ties between the two organizations. The visit underscored the essential role of women in Syria’s evolving political landscape and aimed to enhance cooperation among Syriac-Assyrian organizations in the region.
The delegation, led by Georgette Barsom0, head of the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU), included HNB member Elham Matli and head of SyriacPress in Syria Maria Hanna. They were warmly received by Jamila Kako, head of the ADP Women’s Committee in Tel Tamr, Hiba Asia, head of the ADP Women’s Committee in Hasakah, and ADP members Diana Elias, Madeleine Mushi, and Sabila Ikhtiar. Also present was Semil Ikhtiar, spokesperson for the Assyrian Natori Forces.
Empowering Women in Syria’s Changing Context
In comments on the meeting to SyriacPress, Barsomo emphasized the importance of the visit, noting that the ongoing political and social changes in Syria require women to take on leadership roles. She stressed the need for renewed efforts to empower Syriac-Assyrian women to shape Syria’s future during this transformative period.
Barsomo stated that the visit’s primary goal was reviving coordination among Syriac-Assyrian women’s organizations. The Union’s aim is to empower and organize women while raising awareness about their vital role in the new political era. Enhanced collaboration, she noted, would boost women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes essential for Syria’s rebuilding.
Addressing Regional Challenges and Women’s Role in Rebuilding Syria
The visit facilitated discussions on regional developments, challenges facing the Syriac-Assyrian community, and opportunities for joint action. A central theme was the promotion of women’s rights and their active involvement in shaping Syria’s governance and reconstruction. Leaders emphasized mobilizing women’s capabilities to create a future Syria rooted in equality, inclusivity, and civic engagement.
The meeting highlighted the significance of women’s voices in Syria’s national dialogue. Both HNB and ADP affirmed their commitment to ensuring women play a pivotal role in the country’s development.
