SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi states progress in talks with Syrian Transitional Government
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — In an interview with The Guardian, General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi, characterized recent discussions with the Syrian Transitional Government (STG) as a positive step forward. However, he cautioned that Turkish military operations in North and East Syria continue to undermine the negotiation process between the two sides.
Abdi confirmed that both parties had reached agreement on several general principles, including the formation of two technical committees tasked with coordinating military and civil affairs. He also emphasized a shared commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity, reaffirming that the SDF is an integral part of Syria and should play a role in the country’s future.
Despite these advancements, significant disagreements remain unresolved. Abdi noted that the two sides have yet to reach a consensus on the transition process, including its management, mechanisms, and timeline for implementation.
A key obstacle to progress, according to Abdi, is the continuation of Turkish military actions. These offensives, often carried out in coordination with Turkish-backed militias, threaten regional stability and disrupt diplomatic efforts aimed at fostering cooperation between the SDF and Damascus.
Abdi underscored the SDF’s commitment to collaborating with the transitional government to build a stable and inclusive future for Syria. He advocated for participation in a national dialogue conference without preconditions, reiterating the SDF’s willingness to engage in a comprehensive political solution.
As negotiations continue, the interplay between military realities on the ground and political dialogue will shape the future of North and East Syria and influence the trajectory of the broader Syrian conflict.
