NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — A delegation of international female activists and journalists visited the leadership of the Women’s Protection Units (Yekîneyên Parastina Jin, YPJ) in North and East Syria to discuss the region’s political developments, the role of women in the ongoing struggle, and the challenges they face. The meeting highlighted the YPJ’s contributions to transforming gender dynamics and advancing a self-administered system in the region.

Delegation Members and YPJ Leaders

The delegation included Getty Fernandez from the Peasants’ Union, alongside journalists Molly Wallace, Amy Gardiner, and Heather Sweeney. Representing the YPJ were General Commander Rohilat Afrin, Military Council member Samira Ahmed, Relations Office member Lina Hussein, and Syriac Women’s Protection Office head Noor Seryan.

Discussions on Women’s Empowerment and Governance

During the meeting, YPJ leaders emphasized the transformative societal changes initiated by their forces in North and East Syria. They highlighted their efforts in dismantling patriarchal norms and empowering women within military and civilian structures.

The leaders also pointed out that the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) serves as a model for post-Ba’athist Syria. Women have assumed central roles in defense, governance, and community-building, showcasing a vision for a more inclusive and egalitarian society.

Symbols of Solidarity and Cultural Exchange

In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, the delegation presented photographs of female revolutionaries as a tribute to the YPJ’s ongoing struggle. In return, the YPJ gifted the visitors traditional “Keffiyehs” (Koçer scarves), a symbol of their heritage and identity.

Global Interest in Women’s Role

The visit reflects growing international interest in the role of women within military and political movements in Syria. It also underscores the YPJ’s significant contributions beyond the battlefield as advocates for women’s rights, political participation, and social change in one of the world’s most volatile regions.

This exchange highlights the global admiration for the YPJ’s achievements in promoting equality and reshaping societal norms amidst the challenges of conflict.
