Bethnahrin National Council welcomes Öcalan’s call for peace

BETH NAHRIN — The Presidential Committee of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) has released a statement expressing its support for the peace initiative proposed by imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. The MUB emphasized the importance of the proposal and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue and reconciliation.

Vision for Lasting Peace

In its statement, the Council lauded Öcalan’s 27 February 2025 call for peace and democratic societal transformation, describing it as a pivotal opportunity to address the devastation caused by genocidal mentalities in the Middle East. It stressed that moving away from violence and initiating democratic peace dialogues among the region’s peoples is the most sustainable path to preventing future conflicts.

The MUB further highlighted that the longstanding policies of marginalization and denial have failed, serving only to deepen regional disputes. It called for the adoption of new, peace-oriented frameworks that prioritize democratic values to resolve these issues.

Cost of Historical Denial

The statement condemned the historical erasure of identities, languages, and the cultural heritage of Middle Eastern communities. It argued that such policies have drained the region’s resources, hindered development, and inflicted lasting harm on humanity.

Specifically, it pointed to the systematic marginalization of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) populations — among the oldest peoples of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) — as a major obstacle to regional progress. The Council urged regional governments and institutions rooted in ethnic nationalism and outdated ideologies to abandon divisive strategies.

Crucial Opportunity for Peace

The MUB called on all stakeholders to embrace Öcalan’s peace proposal as a vital chance to break the cycle of hostility and vengeance that has plagued the Middle East. It emphasized that the struggle for freedom and the legal rights of marginalized communities, including the Syriac people, must deepen in response to changing regional dynamics.

The statement underscored that the identities and values of Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans), Kurds, and other ethnic groups can no longer be erased. Accelerating the peace process, ending violence, and establishing a democratic framework are essential for the region’s future stability.

Commitment to Democratic Future

Concluding its statement, the MUB reaffirmed its belief that Öcalan’s peace process represents a transformative step toward democracy and stability in Turkey and the broader Middle East. It expressed gratitude for the efforts of Abdullah Öcalan, Turkish leaders, and international actors striving to resolve the region’s challenges.

The council pledged its full support and commitment to contributing meaningfully to this peace initiative, advocating for democracy, reconciliation, and enduring stability in the region.
