Syriac Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros al-Raï renews call for Lebanon’s neutrality
BEIRUT — Following the Lebanese Parliament’s vote of confidence in the new government led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Syriac Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Raï reiterated his longstanding call for Lebanon’s neutrality. In his Sunday sermon preceding the start of Lent, the Patriarch urged political leaders to steer Lebanon away from regional conflicts and internal divisions.
Government Backed by Confidence
Patriarch al-Raï acknowledged the widespread relief among Lebanese citizens and the international community after the new government secured 95 votes of confidence in Parliament. He described this as a reflection of the trust not only in the government itself but also in newly elected President Joseph Aoun.
“The President and Prime Minister now bear the responsibility of translating this trust into concrete reforms, economic recovery, and institutional restoration,” the Patriarch stated. He emphasized the need for reconciliation among Lebanese citizens based on national unity and equal rights, calling for a collective commitment to the nation above all political or sectarian loyalties.
Lebanon’s Role in International Arena
Addressing concerns about Lebanon’s position in global and regional organizations, Patriarch al-Raï clarified that neutrality does not equate to isolation.
“Lebanon’s neutrality does not mean withdrawing from the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or the United Nations,” he asserted. “Rather, it enhances Lebanon’s role in these institutions, enabling it to contribute to solutions rather than remaining a victim of conflicts and rivalries.”
Renewed Call for Stability
The Patriarch’s renewed appeal for neutrality comes at a critical moment as Lebanon faces economic hardship, political instability, and deep-seated divisions. With a newly formed government and fresh political leadership, his message underscores the urgent need for national unity and a strategic recalibration of Lebanon’s role on the regional and international stage.
