ZALIN, North and East Syria — A delegation from the Syriac Women’s Union in Syria (Huyodo d’Neshe d’Bethnahrin, HNB), took part in International Women’s Day celebrations, participating in various activities and speeches that highlighted the significance of the occasion.
Marking Women’s struggles and achievements
March 8, recognized globally as International Women’s Day, serves as a reminder of the importance of equality, justice, and women’s rights. Across the world, communities mark the day with various events, and northeastern Syria was no exception.
In cities and towns throughout the region, celebrations took place, including a major event in the city of Zalin (Qamishli). Organized by the Kongreya Star, the gathering was held in the village of Himo, drawing women from diverse communities, representatives from the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region North and East Syria (DAARNES), feminist organizations, and civil society groups. Among them was a delegation from the Syriac Women’s Union.
A celebration of culture and heritage
The event featured a vibrant mix of activities, including musical performances, traditional folk dances, and theatrical presentations inspired by the occasion. These performances not only honored women’s contributions but also highlighted the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Several speeches were delivered by organizers and representatives of different communities. Among them, Samira Hanna, a representative of the HNB, spoke about the role of Syriac women in society and the need to strengthen their rights and empowerment across all fields.

A message of solidarity and inclusion
In a statement to Syriac Press, Hanna emphasized the significance of their participation, stating that it reflects the collective celebration of women from all backgrounds in Syria. She also extended her greetings to women worldwide on this important day.
Meanwhile, Mona Ibrahim, an administrator at Kongreya Star, noted that the event in Zalin (Qamishli) was part of a series of celebrations held in various cities across North and East Syria and Holeb (Aleppo). She highlighted the inclusive nature of the gathering, where women from all ethnic and religious communities came together to commemorate the occasion.
“This celebration sends a message to the world,” Ibrahim said, “showcasing the rich diversity of communities and traditions in northeastern Syria.”
As the world marked International Women’s Day, the event in Syria stood as a testament to the resilience, strength, and unity of women across different backgrounds, reaffirming their ongoing struggle for equality and recognition.
