Lebanon’s first lady meets women’s delegation in Baabda, heads to New York for global summit
BEIRUT — Lebanon’s First Lady, Neemat Aoun, hosted a delegation of feminist activists at the Presidential Palace in Baabda in celebration of International Women’s Day. In her address, Aoun praised the dedication and resilience of Lebanese women, particularly in times of crisis, stating that their contributions are the backbone of the country’s stability.
National Day for Lebanese Women
Aoun announced her intention to establish November 4 as a national day to honor Lebanese women, a proposal that will be formalized through a Cabinet decision. She emphasized that this day would serve as an annual occasion to recognize the struggles and achievements of Lebanese women across various sectors. “Lebanon cannot survive without its women, nor can it rise without them,” Aoun declared.
Heading to United Nations for Women’s Rights
Shortly after the meeting, Aoun, who also serves as the President of the National Commission for Lebanese Women, traveled to New York to participate in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), held at the United Nations headquarters from March 10 to March 21.
Saudi Arabia Leads Global Women’s Dialogue
This year’s session, presided over by Saudi Arabia, brings together representatives from UN member states, international and regional organizations, civil society leaders, and gender equality experts. The discussions will focus on advancing women’s empowerment initiatives and promoting gender equality in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Aoun’s Global Agenda
During the summit, Aoun, wife of Syriac Maronite President Joseph Aoun, is expected to deliver a national speech and engage in bilateral meetings with global leaders. Her agenda will prioritize strategies for strengthening women’s participation in decision-making, enhancing social and economic opportunities, and advocating for policies that ensure gender equity.
As Lebanon continues to navigate economic and social challenges, Aoun’s international engagement underscores the country’s commitment to promoting women’s rights on both national and global platforms.
