Syrian Transition Government and Syrian Democratic Forces Reach Agreement on Integration
DARAMSUQ — In a significant development, the Syrian Presidency has announced an agreement to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the institutions of the Syrian Arab Republic. The accord, reached between President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi, emphasizes the unity of Syrian territory and rejects any form of division.
Notably, the agreement ensures full constitutional rights for the Kurdish population within Syria. Although the agreement guarantees the rights of all Syrians to representation and participation in the political process and all state institutions, regardless of their religious and ethnic backgrounds, the agreement makes no explicit mention of other peoples in the agreement, so far.
The agreed integration aligns with ongoing efforts by the Transitional Government to restructure Syria’s defense framework. Discussions have been underway to incorporate various armed factions into a unified national army, aiming to stabilize the region and address longstanding security concerns.
The move to integrate the SDF, of which the Syriac Military Council is a co-founder, is part of broader initiatives by the new Syrian Transitional Government to keep control over the whole of Syria. The SDF controls northeastern Syria, where most of the country’s oil is won. In addition, the US and EU, among others, have set conditions for inclusiveness and the granting of rights to smaller population groups for financial commitments for reconstruction after years of civil war destruction.
The agreement comes after days of brutal killings of mainly Alawites in Syria’s coastal region by the Transitional Government’s Security Forces.
