Global concern over violence in western Syria

LATAKIA and TARTUS, Syria — European Union (EU) spokesperson Anitta Hipper issued a condemnation of the violent attacks in Syria’s coastal region, which claimed the lives of numerous civilians. Hipper confirmed that initial reports identified forces loyal to the former Syrian regime as the perpetrators, calling for their prosecution and accountability.

Hipper also announced EU support for the Syrian Transitional Government’s (STG) investigation committee and emphasized the importance of the upcoming Syria Support Conference in Brussels on 17 March.

Members of Parliament in the Netherlands Pieter Omtzigt (Nieuw Sociaal Contract, NSC) and Eric van der Burg (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democrati, VVD) sharply criticized the EU’s, rejecting the framing of the statement.

Omtzigt called it “a bizarre statement given the many horrific images of summary executions that appear to be the work of the new rulers and their allies.” Van der Burg voiced similar concerns, stating, “This reverses the roles of perpetrators and victims. The regime is responsible here.”

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp (NSC) called for respect for the rights of all communities in Syria, urging EU ambassadors to convene and develop a coordinated response to the deteriorating situation.

During talks with Syrian Transitional President (STG), French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot (Mouvement démocrate, MoDem) expressed deep concern over the escalation. Barrot underscored the importance of accountability and stressed the need for international cooperation to address the crisis.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar conveyed apprehension about the growing international involvement in Damascus, warning that the STG’s actions risk further escalation.

Amnesty International also issued a statement calling on the STG to act decisively to protect civilians and prevent further unlawful killings. Heba Morayef, Amnesty International’s Regional Director, stressed that failure to ensure impartial investigations and bring perpetrators to justice would embolden those who commit crimes with impunity.

The recent violence in Syria’s coastal region has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from both the EU and the international community. As the crisis deepens, leaders and organizations alike are urging decisive action to prevent further atrocities and safeguard the rights of all Syrians.
