Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch Mor John X Yazigi calls for end to atrocities in western Syria and unified path to peace

DARAMSUQ — In a heartfelt appeal, Patriarch of the Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Church of Antioch Mor John X Yazigi urged Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa to end the ongoing atrocities in coastal Syria. He underscored that these actions starkly contradict the president’s vision for a “new Syria” following the revolution’s victory.

Amid the bloody events unfolding in coastal Syria, Patriarch Yazigi conveyed a poignant message to al-Sharaa, stating:

“The violent events in coastal Syria have claimed numerous civilian lives and inflicted injuries on public security forces. However, not all of these victims are remnants of the regime; the majority are innocent civilians, including women and children.”

He detailed the devastation experienced by many towns and villages, where homes have been burned, and their contents looted. The targeted areas have predominantly been those inhabited by Alawites and Christians. The Patriarch expressed deep sorrow over the loss of numerous innocent Christian lives in these tragic events. He recounted harrowing stories of residents being forced to flee their homes, only to be shot and killed, with their properties and vehicles subsequently stolen — such as in the Al-Qusour neighborhood of Baniyas.

Plea for Humanity and Respect

Patriarch Yazigi also decried the desecration of sacred symbols, stating, “Icons of the Virgin Mary are being shattered, trampled upon, and their sanctity violated. She is the Virgin Mary, revered by all Muslims alongside us.”

Addressing President al-Sharaa directly, he implored:

“This is not your rhetoric, and these actions contradict your vision for a new Syria following the revolution’s triumph. Therefore, we call upon you to use your wisdom and influence to immediately end these massacres. Provide a sense of security and stability for all Syrians, regardless of their backgrounds.”

Shared Vision for Syria

In a demonstration of solidarity, Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Mar Awa III Royel joined the voices of other patriarchs urging all Syrians to embrace the language of dialogue and national reconciliation, avoiding vengeance and incitement.

In his message, he called on all relevant parties in Syria to work toward peaceful solutions that preserve the dignity of all citizens, particularly those from minority groups, while safeguarding the unity of the nation.

Hope for Brighter Future

As the situation in Syria remains difficult, the appeals from these religious leaders carry a profound hope for peace and reconciliation. Their messages underscore the urgent need for compassion and understanding in a nation that has endured immense suffering.

The path to a new Syria — one that respects the rights and dignity of all its citizens — depends on a steadfast commitment to dialogue and an immediate end to violence.
