IRAQ: Beth Nahrain Organization for Women celebrates International Women’s Day in Baghdede

BAGHDEDE, Iraq — The Beth Nahrain Organization for Women (BNOW) celebrated International Women’s Day, 8 March, with a meaningful event held at the theater hall of the Mor Bulos Church Services Center in the Nineveh Towns play of Baghdede (Qaraqosh / Hamdaniyeh).

Distinguished Gathering of Community Leaders

The celebration was attended by prominent figures, including Syriac Catholic Archbishop of Mosul Mar Benedict Younan Hinno, Pastor of Virgin Mary Church in Baritle (Bartella) Chorepiskopos Quryakos al-Bartali, and Head of Mor Bulos Center Fr. Faris Tamas. Representatives from the Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA), the Beth Nahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo d’Bethnahrin, MUB), and members of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community were also present.

Honoring Martyrs and Advocating for Women

The event began with a solemn minute of silence for Iraq’s martyrs, accompanied by prayers and a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of martyr İzla Neriman Özgun, who passed away just two days prior to 8 March.

Following this, Ronak Elias Hanna, BNOW Vice President, delivered a statement, and Hanan Matti Touma, BNOW President, addressed the audience, reflecting on the organization’s mission and achievements.

Cultural and Artistic Highlights

The program included poetry recitations that celebrated women’s strength and resilience. A documentary showcasing BNOW’s impactful work over the past 20 years was screened, highlighting their contributions to women’s empowerment and community development.

Recognizing Contributions and Craftsmanship

Certificates of appreciation were presented to participants in recognition of their support and efforts. The event concluded with the opening of a special exhibition featuring handmade crafts created by BNOW members, showcasing their creativity and dedication.

The celebration underscored the ongoing commitment of the Beth Nahrain Organization for Women to advocating for women’s rights and strengthening the role of women in the Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian community and beyond.
