Memorial service held in Södertälje, Sweden, for martyr İzla Neriman Özgun
SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden — In a solemn ceremony held in Södertälje, Sweden, hundreds gathered to honor the life and legacy of Hawro (Comrade) İzla Neriman Özgun, a martyr of the Beth Nahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB). The funeral, marked by deep emotions and heartfelt tributes, highlighted her enduring impact on the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community.
The funeral service, on Monday, was led by Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Sweden and Scandinavia Mor Yohanon Lahdo and Patriarchal Vicar of the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese of Sweden Archbishop Mor Dioscorus Benjamin Atash, supported by Father Ephrem, Father Ayoub, Father Youssef, Father Naaman, and Father Melki Asho. Representatives from numerous Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) institutions and political organizations attended, including Co-Chairs of the European Syriac Union (ESU) Fahmi Vergili and Manuela Demir.

Speeches by family members and close friends added a deeply personal dimension to the ceremony. İzla’s sister, Shamiram Majida, delivered a moving tribute, while her daughter, Helen Zivkir, shared heartfelt memories of her mother’s life. Helen also expressed gratitude to İzla’s comrade, Phyllis Reyo, who provided maternal care during İzla’s dedication to national causes.
Condolences poured in from around the world, reflecting İzla’s far-reaching influence. Messages came from the Christian Middle East Center in Germany, the Orthodox Relief Foundation in Turkey, and various Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) organizations. Member of Parliament in Sweden Yusuf Aydin (Kristdemokraterna, KD) and lawyer Ilhan Aydin were also in attendance, showcasing widespread recognition of İzla’s contributions.

The service included a poetic farewell by George Shimoun, whose stirring recitation captured the essence of İzla’s legacy. A violin performance by Fadi Bashir added an emotional layer, creating an atmosphere of reflection and unity.

Following the service, a condolence reception was held at the Mor Yaqub al-Nasibini Church hall in Södertälje. Over three hundred attendees gathered to offer support and solidarity, underscoring the strength of the community during this time of loss.

In closing remarks, Archbishop Atash paid tribute to İzla’s tireless advocacy for her people and women’s rights. He highlighted the significance of continuing her mission, particularly in light of International Women’s Day.
