Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union calls for official recognition of Akitu, Babylonian Syriac–Assyrian New Year

NINEVEH PLAINS, Iraq — The Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) has called on the Governor of Nineveh to suspend public institution operations on April 1st to commemorate the Babylonian Syriac-Assyrian New Year, Akitu.

In a statement, the HBA emphasized the significance of the Babylonian Syriac-Assyrian civilization, which originated in Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and left a lasting impact on humanity. The party highlighted that this day is celebrated annually on 1 April by Iraqis of all backgrounds.

“As April 1st, 2025, approaches, the HBA urges the Nineveh Governor to declare this day an official holiday throughout Nineveh Governorate,” the statement read. “This day unites all Iraqis, regardless of their sects, religions, and ethnicities, and serves as an occasion to strengthen national bonds among them.”

The HBA’s appeal seeks to honor the rich heritage of Mesopotamia and foster unity across Iraq’s diverse communities.

Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian political parties made a similar call for recognition of Akitu last year.
