Syriac Union Party rejects Constitutional Declaration: Transitional Government is disregarding goal of Syrian Revolution

BETH ZALIN, North and East Syria — In a public statement, The Syriac Union Party (SUP) strongly criticized the newly signed Constitutional Declaration, claiming it fails to establish the necessary foundation for the country’s transitional phase and perpetuates the ideology of the former Assad regime.

In its statement, the SUP expressed outright rejection of the document. The party accused the Syrian Transitional Government (STG) of disregarding the goals of the Syrian Revolution, which aimed for democracy, justice, and human rights.

The SUP argued that the Declaration undermines ethnic pluralism by promoting a singular national identity and maintaining a highly centralized power structure. These measures, the SUP asserted, reflect a continuation of the marginalization policies practiced under the previous regime.

The SUP warned that the current approach jeopardizes Syria’s stability and fails to address the critical requirements for a successful transitional phase. The party emphasized the need for a framework that prioritizes trust-building, civil peace, and transitional justice through genuine power-sharing among all of Syria’s diverse communities.

The party’s statement reiterated that Syria is inherently multi-ethnic and multi-religious, comprising Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs–Assyrians–Arameans, Christians, Muslims, Yezidis, and others. The SUP advocated for a secular and inclusive Syrian state that remains neutral toward all religions and ethnicities while preserving the nation’s unity, sovereignty, and independence.

The SUP also reaffirmed its commitment to a decentralized democratic system, where all communities can coexist with equal rights and contribute to a shared national identity. Such a system, they argued, would more accurately reflect the diversity and aspirations of Syria’s population.
