The Syriac Women’s Union in Syria holds a dialogue seminar in Zalin (Qamishli) to honor Hawro Izla’s struggle for women’s rights

BETH ZALIN (QAMISHLI), North and East Syria — In order to explore new ways of addressing issues related to Syriac (Aramaic-Chaldean-Assyrian) women, the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) in Syria held a dialogue seminar within the International Women’s Day activities, at the Family Center in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria. The seminar was held in honor of martyr İzla Neriman Özgun, with the participation of women from institutions of the Beth Nahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) and community activists.

The seminar began with a discussion on the life and struggle of hawro (comrade) İzla, followed by an open dialogue on women’s issues and their rights, which saw active participation from attendees.

In comments to our news desk, SWU representative, Zalin (Qamishli) branch, Josephine Soume stated that the seminar was a tribute to the struggle of hawro İzla for women’s rights. Soume noted that the seminar included various interventions and discussions on the challenges women face in society.

SWU Syria Head Georgette Barsoumo stressed that the seminar addressed the role of women in the family and society, as well as SWU’s efforts to empower women. “SWU is considered an academy that has produced numerous female leaders,” Barsoumo added.

This event is part of SWU’s broader efforts to improve the role of women in society and highlight their rights and challenges.
