Bethnahrin National Council calls for unity and resistance through ancient festivals of Newroz and Akitu
BETH NAHRIN — In a public statement, the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo d’Bethnahrin, MUB) highlighted the enduring significance of ancient Mesopotamian festivals, particularly Newroz (21 March) and Akitu (1 April). These celebrations, rooted in the tales of Dumuzid and Ishtar, symbolize unity, cultural heritage, and the collective struggle for a harmonious existence. The MUB emphasized that Newroz has evolved into a symbol of resistance against oppression, inspiring millions in their pursuit of a free and honorable life.
The MUB also acknowledged the revitalized spirit of Newroz and Akitu among Kurds, Syriacs, and other marginalized communities in the Middle East, reflecting a collective aspiration for a peaceful, democratic, and free society. They noted that as these communities embrace values of freedom, solidarity, and equality, oppressive regimes are being challenged, leading to the restoration and celebration of ancient cities and cultures.
The MUB also extended greetings to Abdullah Öcalan for his peace initiatives and honored those who continue to resist oppression, both within their homeland and in the diaspora.
Translated MUB Statement:
The peoples of Mesopotamia and the Middle East, the cradle of civilization and humanity, have celebrated the arrival of spring and the renewal of the soil with grand festivals for thousands of years. They embrace the future with hope and enthusiasm.
Our ancient holidays of Newroz (March 21) and Akitu (April 1) are legendary traditions rooted in the stories of Dumuzid and Ishtar. These holidays, enriched by shared historical and cultural heritage, symbolize our unity, homeland, and struggle for a common life. Newroz has become a banner of resistance and rebellion against oppression. Today, the fight for a free and honorable life has taken on national and social significance, inspiring millions.
Revitalized by the spirit of Newroz and Akitu, the Kurds, Syriacs, and all the oppressed peoples of the Middle East are asserting their desire for a peaceful, democratic, and free society. The seeds of freedom, solidarity, patriotism, equality, knowledge, and resistance are being sown in the lands of Mesopotamia. As a result, outdated governments and oppressive dictatorships are collapsing, chains of subjugation are breaking, and new life is emerging.
Our ancient and sacred cities are being restored and celebrated, reclaiming their rightful place in history as guiding lights for all humanity. Through the struggle against genocidal ideologies, our region is being revitalized with authentic values. Ethnic identities and diverse beliefs, once targeted for destruction, are flourishing anew. The cultural wealth that was ignored and suppressed by uniform, racist, and jihadist regimes is regaining its rightful value and significance.
With the historical legacy of the Akitu Festival and the spirit of resistance embodied by Newroz, the societies of Mesopotamia and the Middle East have overcome fear and found the courage to shape their own destinies. Like nature in spring, the people are transforming and gaining strength, raising their collective voices to demand freedom.
On this occasion, on behalf of the Bethnahrin National Council, we extend our greetings and congratulations to Mr. Abdullah Öcalan for his call to and initiation of the peace process for a democratic society. We honor and celebrate all those who have risen for a new life, the prisoners who resist in confinement, the freedom fighters who struggle on all fronts, and the patriots who take a principled stand against injustice both in our homeland and in the diaspora.
We proudly celebrate the great holidays of Newroz and Akitu with all who resist oppression and uphold the values of freedom, unity, and justice.
