Suwayda protesters call for decentralization as Suwayd Military Council calls for political reform

SUWAYDA, Syria — Activists in the southern Syrian city of Suwayda staged a protest on Sunday, voicing their opposition to the policies of the Syrian Transitional Government (STG). The demonstration coincided with a statement issued by the political office of the Suwayda Military Council, advocating for a decentralized governance system to ensure justice and equality across all Syrian provinces.

The protest, held in Al-Karama Square in central Suwayda, saw demonstrators chanting for political rights and social justice. Participants emphasized the need for inclusive decision-making in shaping Syria’s future, urging the involvement of all segments of society.

Meanwhile, the Suwayda Military Council’s statement called for a political structure that would allow Syrian regions to manage their local affairs within the framework of a unified Syrian state. According to the Council, such a system would promote balanced development and guarantee equal opportunities for all provinces.

The Council reaffirmed its core mission of safeguarding the Syria and its people from internal and external threats, protecting public and private property, and ensuring the security of all citizens without discrimination. It pledged to counter any attempts to destabilize Suwayda and to cooperate with national and international forces working in the interests of the Syrian people.

The statement further outlined the Council’s vision for Syria’s future — one built on secularism, democracy, and the protection of citizens’ rights, regardless of religious, ethnic, or ideological affiliations. It criticized what it described as a “one-party government” that marginalizes political and social groups, as well as the recently proposed constitutional declaration, arguing that it fails to meet the Syrian people’s demands for freedom and justice.

The Council closed by reaffirming its commitment to working with all national forces dedicated to Syria’s unity, stability, and long-term prosperity.
