Calls for transparent investigation into Kha Nison–Akitu 6775 attack in Nohadra (Duhok), Kurdistan Region of Iraq
NOHADRA and ARBA’ILO, Kurdistan Region of Iraq — In the latest developments regarding the Kha Nison–Akitu 6775 attack in Nohadra (Duhok), Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), Kurdistan Regional Security Council confirmed the arrest of the assailant, identifying him as a Syrian member of the Islamic State (ISIS).
An official statement revealed that the attacker, driven by extremist ideology, assaulted celebrants with a bladed weapon, injuring 3 people.
The incident sparked outrage among political and civil groups.
The Bethnahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) strongly condemned the attack.
HBA head Joseph Sliwa asserted that some radical Kurdish nationalists are more dangerous than ISIS, highlighting ongoing ethnic tensions in the region.
The Assyrian Democratic Movement (Zowaa) demanded the incident be treated as terrorism rather than an isolated crime, urging authorities to transparently disclose investigation findings and expedite the perpetrator’s prosecution.
During a hospital visit to the injured, Governor of Nohadra Dr. Ali Tatar Tawfiq Muhammad Amin (Kurdistan Democratic Party, KDP) denounced the attack, emphasizing that the region’s millennia-old coexistence will not be disrupted by terrorists, while awaiting official investigation results.
Iraqi MP Dr. James Haido labeled the assault as a cowardly act targeting Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian celebrations, calling for stringent security measures to prevent future attacks.
