Jerusalem Post: Israeli airstrikes on Syrian airbase meant as warning to Turkey

TEL AVIV / ANKARA – Following intense Israeli airstrikes late Wednesday night, Israeli military radio reported that the primary objective of the attacks on Syrian sites was to send a clear warning to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Citing an Israeli official, The Jerusalem Post reported that the strikes were meant to deter Turkey from establishing military bases in Syria and interfering with Israeli military operations in the region.

According to Syria’s state news agency (SANA), Israeli warplanes struck the vicinity of a scientific research facility in Daramsuq (Damascus)’s Barzeh district, as well as Hemto (Hama) Military Airbase.

Israeli media confirmed that the attacks also targeted Al-Tifor (T4) Military Airbase in Hmoth (Homs) countryside, with over 10 separate strikes.

Analysts suggest that Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) is seeking to establish a strategic military zone in Syria under Turkish control, aiming to reduce Israel’s dominance over Syrian airspace.
