Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union condemns Akitu attack in Nohadra (Duhok), urges strict enforcement of Iraqi law

NOHADRA, Kurdistan Region of Iraq — The Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo d’Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) issued a strong statement condemning the recent terrorist attack targeting the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community during their celebration of the Babylonian-Assyrian New Year, Kha Nison–Akitu, in the city of Nohadra (Duhok), Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

In the wake of the 1 April incident, in which an assailant armed with an axe disrupted the festivities with the intent to harm, the party described the attack as a cowardly and criminal act. The assault left a young man and a woman injured.

The HBA emphasized that the perpetrator should face life imprisonment under Article 31 of the Iraqi Penal Code and urged the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to rigorously enforce this provision of the law.

Reaffirming its resilience and unwavering commitment to the cultural heritage and identity of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people — rooted in the ancient civilizations of Aram, Babylon, Assyria, and Akkad — the HBA concluded its statement by expressing well wishes for the swift recovery of the injured and issuing a firm condemnation of the attacker and any potential accomplices.
