Global Executions Surge in 2024, driven by Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq

LONDON — Despite many governments declaring the abolition of the death penalty, global execution numbers have risen sharply, according to a report by Amnesty International.

Recorded executions worldwide surged to over 1,500 in 2024, marking the highest tally since 2015. Amnesty International cautioned that the actual figures are likely much higher, as some countries refuse to disclose comprehensive data on executions.

Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq accounted for 90% of all recorded executions, fueling the alarming rise. Iran topped the list with at least 972 executions, an increase from 853 in 2023. Saudi Arabia saw its execution count more than double, reaching at least 345. Iraq carried out 63 executions, nearly quadrupling the number recorded in 2023.

The report also highlighted China as the “world’s top executioner,” estimating that thousands are executed annually. However, Beijing continues to withhold official figures, leaving the full scope of executions in China shrouded in secrecy.

Amnesty’s findings underscore a troubling global trend, calling into question commitments to human rights and the global push to abolish capital punishment.
