Iraq sets 11 November for next parliamentary elections amid calls to maintain timelines

BAGHDAD — The Iraqi Council of Ministers has officially designated 11 November 2025, as the date for the country’s next parliamentary elections.

A statement from the Council’s media office confirmed the decision during today’s session, aligning with demands to uphold constitutional deadlines. The ruling Coordination Framework Alliance had previously stressed its firm opposition to delaying the legislative elections, insisting they occur as scheduled.

Last month, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) began updating the voter registry, a process set to continue for one month. According to IHEC spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalay, approximately 30 million citizens are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections.

IHEC has assured that preparations are underway to hold the elections as planned. The Commission emphasized its commitment to conducting the electoral process on time to ensure compliance with constitutional mandates.

The 2021 parliamentary elections, held on 10 October, recorded the lowest voter turnout in Iraq’s post-2003 history, with only 41% of eligible voters participating.

With the date now finalized, Iraq looks ahead to a crucial electoral process that will shape the country’s political landscape.
