Lebanese Forces party leaders criticize Hezbollah’s weapons and influence
BEIRUT — In an interview with Syriac satellite channel Suroyo TV, Maroun Maroun, head of the Media and Communication Authority in the Lebanese Forces party, delivered a scathing critique of Hezbollah’s actions and their impact on Lebanon’s sovereignty. His remarks were echoed by Dr. Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces party, who emphasized the party’s stance on disarming Hezbollah and restoring state authority.
Maroun Maroun highlighted the detrimental effects of Hezbollah’s involvement in regional conflicts, particularly its role in Gaza and Lebanon. He stated: “The support war did not benefit Gaza, nor did it help Lebanon; it only aided Israel. Where is the national allegiance of Hezbollah’s leadership?”
Maroun Maroun is a key figure within the Lebanese Forces party, known for his expertise in media and communication. As head of the Media and Communication Authority, he plays a vital role in shaping the party’s outreach and engagement strategies. His leadership reflects the party’s commitment to promoting reform and protecting minority rights.
In the Suroyo TV interview, he argued that Hezbollah’s strategies have undermined Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty, while inadvertently serving the interests of Israel. He called for a reevaluation of Hezbollah’s role in Lebanon, emphasizing the need for national unity and allegiance to the state.
Geagea’s Meeting with Ortagus
Dr. Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces party, echoed Maroun’s concerns during his weekend meeting with US Special Envoy Morgan Ortagus at his residence in Maa’rab. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Natasha Franceschi and US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson joined Ortagus, along with MP Strida Geagea and Executive Committee member Joseph Gebeily.
The discussions centered on the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the cessation of hostilities and arrangements to secure Lebanon’s borders. The US delegation and Lebanese officials emphasized the importance of disarming all militias — Lebanese and non-Lebanese alike — and ensuring that the Lebanese state possesses exclusive control over air and seaports. Talks also addressed Israel’s withdrawal from the remaining occupied areas in southern Lebanon and the need to extend state authority across all Lebanese territories.
Geagea reaffirmed the Lebanese Forces party’s position:
“Disarming illegal armed groups is a central Lebanese demand. It is the only viable path toward a functional state. Without a strong and effective state, Lebanon will remain stuck in the same cycle it has endured for the past two decades.”
Lebanese Forces Party’s Stance on Hezbollah
The Lebanese Forces party has consistently advocated for the disarmament of Hezbollah and the restoration of state authority. The party views Hezbollah’s weapons as a major obstacle to Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability. Both Maroun and Geagea have emphasized that the exclusivity of arms within state institutions is crucial for building a democratic and independent Lebanon.
The combined statements of Maroun Maroun and Dr. Samir Geagea come at a critical juncture for Lebanon, as the country struggles with political fragmentation, economic crises, and regional tensions. The Lebanese Forces party views Hezbollah’s weapons and influence as a major obstacle to Lebanon’s sovereignty, highlighting the need for international support to resolve these issues.
