Russia welcomes SDF integration agreement as step toward Syrian unity

MOSCOW — The Russian Foreign Ministry has hailed a groundbreaking agreement between the General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi and head of the Syrian Transitional Government (STG) Ahmad al-Sharaa, which outlines the integration of the SDF into the Syrian state’s institutions.

During a press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the agreement as “a positive step toward restoring Syria’s unity and enhancing its security and stability.”

Announced by the Syrian presidency on 10 March 10, the agreement represents a pivotal development in efforts to reconcile Syria’s divided military and political factions. The agreement provides for the formal incorporation of the SDF into the Syrian state’s institutional framework.

Zakharova acknowledged the significant challenges that may arise during implementation, including political, logistical, and security obstacles. She emphasized the importance of all parties adopting a constructive and conciliatory approach.

“Moscow understands that realizing the signed agreements will be accompanied by major difficulties of various kinds,” Zakharova said. “However, to overcome them, the parties must maintain constructive positions and be prepared for reconciliation.”

The agreement comes amid renewed regional and international focus on stabilizing Syria and highlights Russia’s ongoing role as a central mediator in shaping the country’s future governance.
