Patriarch Sako consecrates Church of Prophet Ibrahim at ancient site of Ur, celebrating unity and faith

DHI QAR, Iraq — In a historic and spiritually significant ceremony at the ancient site of Ur in Iraq’s Dhi Qar province, Chaldean Patriarch Cardinal Mar Louis Raphael Sako presided over the consecration of the Church of Prophet Ibrahim.

The ceremony, attended by bishops, priests, nuns, and devoted members of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community, celebrated the region’s deep-rooted spiritual heritage. In his sermon, Patriarch Sako expressed immense joy at establishing a church in the city forever linked to the biblical patriarch Abraham. He highlighted Abraham’s divine calling as a testament to faith and a unifying symbol for believers.

Patriarch Sako emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the church’s construction, noting the remarkable cooperation between Iraqi Christians and Muslims. “This partnership exemplifies the bonds of faith and fellowship that transcend religious differences, showcasing the true essence of the Iraqi spirit — love and mutual respect,” he declared. He condemned extremism and terrorism as antithetical to all religions, advocating for a society that honors its diverse heritage and promotes peaceful coexistence.

The consecration ceremony also served as a moment of remembrance, coinciding with the legacy of Pope Francis’s 2021 pilgrimage to Ur. Recalling the pontiff’s interfaith prayer at the site, Patriarch Sako described it as “a journey to the house of our father Abraham,” underscoring the enduring message of unity.

The Church of Prophet Ibrahim is set to open officially after Easter, once both Christian and Islamic fasting periods conclude. Its inauguration symbolizes a new chapter of spiritual renewal and interfaith harmony in this historic cradle of civilization.
