Lebanese PM Nawaf Salam calls for national renewal on anniversary of Lebanese Civil War
BEIRUT — Marking the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam delivered a speech filled with hope for a new chapter in Lebanon’s history. Speaking at Martyrs’ Square in Beirut, Salam emphasized the urgent need to rebuild a strong, sovereign state that commands respect domestically and internationally, relying on its national army for security and stability.
“It is time to build a Lebanese state that serves its people, not the other way around,” Salam declared. He urged the nation to learn from the tragedies of the civil war and focus on restoring citizens’ trust by reforming institutions on robust and transparent foundations.
Salam reiterated the government’s commitment to reclaiming Lebanese territories in the south, still occupied by Israeli forces following the recent conflict with Hezbollah. He highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure these border points and protect Lebanon’s sovereignty.
The prime minister also announced an upcoming official visit to Daramsuq (Damascus), where he will meet Ahmed al-Sharaa, the head of the Syrian Transitional Government (STG). The visit will address the unresolved issue of Lebanese citizens who disappeared during and after the civil war under the brutal rule of Syria’s former Baath regime. This marks Salam’s first visit to Syria since assuming office, underscoring the importance of addressing this sensitive chapter in Lebanon-Syria relations.
Salam concluded by affirming the government’s commitment to initiating comprehensive reforms and fostering unity among the Lebanese people, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past lead to a more stable and prosperous future.
